Oil paintings by Eva Hesse will be showcased in a rare exhibition of her works at the Brooklyn Museum's Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. The "Eva Hesse Spectres 1960" showcase of her oil paintings will start from September 16 and go on till January 8.

The group of 18 semi-representational oil paintings by the artist when she was just 24 years old will stand in contrast to her more popular works. These oil paintings constitute an important link to her Minimalist sculptural assemblages and a few of them have already been showcased in some recent museum exhibitions but never as a group.

The oil paintings are of two distinct types with one series mainly being intimate in scale with loosely rendered figures which are standing or dancing in groups but are still disconnected. The other series of oil paintings represents the odd, alien like creatures and certain depictions of Eva herself. This showcase explores the inner struggle of the artist with her aspirations and nightmares.

A museum in Tallahassee, Florida has been ordered not to return a painting that is on loan from Italy. The federal officials have ordered the museum not to return the 473 year old painting by Girolamo Romano.
This painting by the Italian Renaissance artist is of questionable ownership since the federal officials believe that the Nazis stole it during the World War II. The Ministry of Culture is trying to determine the ownership of the painting entitled "Christ Carrying the Cross Dragged by a Rogue".
According to Chucha Barber, the chief executive officer of the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, states that the United States attorney had informed the museum that the painting had been illegally seized form a Jewish family during the war and that it was not supposed to be returned to Italy until further notice. The painting originally belongs to Lionel Salem who is the grandson of the original owner Guiseppe Gentili. He owned several paintings which were sold in a 1941 government auction but many of these paintings have been returned to the family over the course of a long legal battle.
