Acrylic paint is often called a new paint because it has only been produced since the 1950s when it was made from a mineral spirit base. Since the 1960s they have been made from a water base. Because of this they have no strong smells associated with them.
Acrylic paint ages well and does not take on the yellowing with age that other paints are susceptible to as they get older. Unlike oil paint, acrylic paint can go on in any order and, without using any special technique to stop it from cracking. Also, because it dries faster than oil paint, the artist does not have to wait for one layer to dry before they can continue painting on the next. Of course, this means that you have to work faster than if you were using oil paint.
Acrylic paint is the paint of choice for many new painters because it is very flexible and adhesive. It is easy to prepare the canvas or other medium without having a lot of painting knowledge or skills.
